KENSAL RISE LIBRARY WAS MY FIRST JOB, I STARTED WORKING THERE IN 1965 WHEN I WAS 15 ! I HAD 2 VERY HAPPY YEARS THERE BEFORE MY FAMILY MOVED TO HACKNEY. IT IS BEYOND BELIEF THAT THE COUNCIL COULD CONSIDER CLOSING DOWN THIS FINE HISTORICAL BUILDING, AND A GREAT ASSSET TO THE PEOPLE OF KENSAL RISE
Library lover from Sydney
What has happened to Britain? Libraries – an anachronism!
I live in Sydney, Australia, and go to Leichhardt Library every week, to borrow books and DVDs, and read newspapers and magazines. It is always full of school-children and their parents, all ages in fact. I have MS and use a mobility scooter (and have easy access to the library). I order and reserve books online, followed by emails when the books are in, and also when they’re due back. Any book review that I like in the Sydney Morning Herald or the Guardian or Spectator, I order the book online at the library. There we are – the modern way to run a library!
With author events, holiday programs and the myriad of activities that our local libraries run, well-stocked libraries are the cornerstone of living in a
‘civilised society’. Remember we had human values that held equal weight with money and finances and budgets (before Thatcherism, or Reaganism, or supply-side economics delivered us to the world of the GFC)
Hold fast Kensal Rise Library supporters – people around the world are watching!
