The morethanbooks website will try and share info about all library closure plans in Brent.

Thanks Rob, looks great. We’ve added a link to it on the right.

Sarah Teather was on the panel for BBC Radio 4′s Any Questions show on the 14th Jan. I’ve uploaded an edited copy of the show, and you can listen again to the whole show via the BBC Radio 4 website.

    Hi folks.

Thanks for pulling the site together , a useful rallying point.

I think it is worth adding the action of making a formal written response to Brent’s consultation on their library strategy. This closes in March. They’ll have to include and acknowledge responses from members of the public in this so it’s important to maximise number of detailed responses on this from residents.

Writing to central government and MPs may be helpful in raising awareness, but the scale and depth of cuts going on around the country at the moment means it is unlikely to create indirect pressure on the council. MPs and ministers will just point out that this is a local decision taken by the council and there’s nothing they can do to intervene.

Hello, my name is Kim Lee and I’m 17. My local Friern Barnet Library is outlined to close under Barnet’s new strategy plan. It’s going through public consultation til 13/06/2011. I have organised our first protest outside the library, N11 3DS this Sat 7 May 2-5pm. The aim is to raise awareness of what is really happening. Today our homemade banner was put up opposite the library and our ePetition has been going well – please sign it at

    Thank you.

Also we’d love to hear any ideas or suggestions that we can use to really get the council to hear ;) How did you manage to get your articles into the National Press??! Simply amazing work you guys are doing, I am so inspired.

I have written to Sarah Teather MP and Councillor Powney in a plea to save the library I joined in 1940, helping to support me through the blitz, in school studies at Harvest Road and Willesden County until qualifying as a teacher and working at Keble Memorial Scool and Aylestone Secondary. This vital support must continue.
Although now in the Isle of Man, I still value the part Kensal Rise Library played in my life.

I was born  DUNDONALD ROAD,kensal Rise in 1943. The house was divided into two flats. I remember on Sundays we exchanged papers with the flat downstairs. It was the only reading for the family. The Kensal Rise library was my life-saver. I used to visit nearly every night coming home after school. Looking back it nourished me, fed me ideas, gave me a passion for words, provided me with the words to think with. There must still be lads like me who have no books at home who need the life-blood of a local library, a library which makes a difference…..

this is totally absurd! I can’t understand why anybody seeks its closure! all the luck!

The idea of any library closing fills me with horror, and as a result, I would love to help you.
I’m in Australia though, so other than emailing the councillors (and fudging my address a little), and bidding on something in your eBay auction,  is there any thing at all I could possibly do that might be helpful? Is there a separate place I can make an outright donation?

I grew up in Kensal Rise (1973) and as a child went to this library very regularly and all through the long summer holidays. I used to spend hours choosing my books wisely and be so excited opening each one and triumphant when completing one. Coming from local state schools, I managed to go to university then do a Masters and become very successful in my field, I firmly believe a love of reading and an abundance of free books helped me to succeed. Having recently had a child of my own I have already enrolled us in our local library in Hampton Court, and visit their baby ‘story time’ sessions regularly. I couldnt bear for my child not to have access to as many books as they want, and to not experience the excitement of entering into a world of fiction. What an enormous shame, if any library closes but a personal pang for me if Kensal Rise closes.

They are moving the books out on Sunday night it has been confirmed to me today. The reason being so late on a Sunday is that they think no one will turn up an stop them .

If every new born in Scotland is to receive a classical music CDto appreciate music from young, surely allowing children to free access of books in their neighbourhood is not too far fetch an idea to keep?
