Jon Scott and Space UK blew the roof off last Sunday and got everyone up and moving to their funky beat! They played  soul covers, as well as their own new numbers at our Live Soul Night on July 17th, in aid of our  Big Fundraising Drive to refurbish, equip and operate Kensal Rise Library.  Much dancing, drinking and fun had by all – taking us even closer to achieving our phase 1 fundraising target of £80,000.
Thanks to everyone who supported the event, to our lovely volunteers and to Berkmann Wines for donating some of the fine wine.
Special thanks go to Queens Park Community School’s retiring Headteacher, Mr Mike Hulme, for hosting us – and for  all the other 100-and-1 things he has always done to help our events run super-smoothly and have such impact on the night. (Mike even found time to rig our stage lights!) We deeply value our partnership with QPCS and look forward to it continuing and expanding.  Meanwhile, we send Mike our warmest wishes for his ‘retirement’, and are delighted that he has agreed to continue being an FKRL Trustee.
We also thank  Daniels Estate Agents for their generous and continuing sponsorship and support.

Live Soul Music Fundraising Night

kensal rise library

Buy your ticket online here

Alternatively, tickets are available for purchase from C & D Food and Wine (62 College Road, Kensal Green, NW10 5ET) and Daniels Estate Agents (77 Chamberlayne Road, Kensal Rise, NW10 3ND).

The evening features Afro-Soul singer songwriter Jon Scott, and contemporary eight piece band Space UK.

Jon ScottNigerian-born London-based Afro-soul optimist Jon Scott describes his music as feel good pop-soul. Scott’s musical journey began as a child in Lagos, taking in the kaleidoscopic clash of sounds that engulfed him as he walked through the Nigerian city streets. ‘Its not records in stores and supermarkets like it is here. If you’re walking down a Lagos street the shops are cheek to jowl. One minute you’re hearing hi-life, the next minute Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Abba… you’re hearing everything at once, including the local Afro-Beat’.

Space UK are an eight-piece band made up of players, singers, writers and producers at the very top of their game. They are the only band of their kind to offer a MOBO winner and international number 1 chart-topper as a core member featured vocalist. Space UK’s founder members are long established songwriters and producers for all the major labels, with a long list of pop, dance, classical, TV and feature film credits.

Brent Council honours Kensal Rise library campaigner

The London Borough of Brent announced Margaret Bailey, Chair of the Friends of Kensal Rise Library, as one of its 2015 Community Champions at its awards ceremony on 4th November at the Civic Centre in Wembley .

The Brent Community Champions Awards are held annually by Brent Council to honour and recognise individuals who have given outstanding community and voluntary service in Brent. For the last five years, Margaret Bailey has led the campaign to save the library service in Kensal Rise. In a fight that has drawn local residents together in defense of a beloved institution, Ms. Bailey has been a tireless champion of community values. Since then FKRL has fought to restore the library service under the building’s subsequent owners. Campaigners, led by Ms. Bailey, have now secured a guaranteed space on the ground floor for a volunteer-run library. That space will be rent-free in perpetuity, while the rest of the building will be converted into residential units. Margaret Bailey, Chair of the Friends of Kensal Rise Library commented: Im delighted by this award but it should really go to everybody in Kensal Rise and beyond who has worked over the last five years to save our precious library. Above all, we now need to raise the funds to make our new community library viable, so I appeal to businesses, donors and trusts to help us secure our future…
