Campaign update from Margaret Bailey – Wed 17th Feb

Hi Everyone,
Great to see all the billboards up everywhere, and the beautiful banner outside Kensal Green Station, and I’m sure I have seen more posters in windows.

A reminder that the Library Transformation Questionnaire still needs to be filled in. Go to Brent Council’s website if you haven’t filled it in yet, please.

The committee, as well as continuing to lobby and explore options, is drafting a document to put to Brent, involving greater community involvement, refurbishment of the upper floors and bringing in partner organisations.

The council executive meeting was well attended on Tuesday evening and it has been reported that there was an amendment to the budget motion from Cllr James Powney stating that the council remains in talks over the library services and Charteris Sports Centre which may have an effect on the budget which was adopted by the Executive. Thanks to all the people who managed to go to this meeting.

Great to see the other libraries in Brent threatened with closure having such well organised campaigns. Well done Preston at their public meeting last night getting the support of Brent North Labour MP Barry Gardiner against the closure of the libraries. Can we expect some more Labour support?

The tickets for the Zadie Smith Fundraiser at the Paradise on 29 March are now available at Queens Park Books, Minkies Deli in Chamberlayne Rd and L’Angolos deli in College Rd.

Other events are being planned and we shall keep you updated as details are finalised. You could also let us know about the sort of events you would like to see organised.

Thank you for ideas that keep coming and copies of letters that some of you have received from MP’s etc
A lot of people are doing great stuff.

Regards,

Margaret Bailey

P.S. Have saved the big ask for last!

The Full Council Meeting is on 28th February. Before then we need to lobby very hard so that Labour Councillors are reminded that their political futures may depend on either abstaining, or voting against the closure of libraries (preferable). The list of Labour councillors that need to be contacted, not on the Executive but having a vote at Full Council are below. They need to be telephoned, emailed, visited at their surgeries etc
I know this is a big ask, but we need to keep up the pressure. Maybe two or three a day would not be too onerous?
